Aim of the service

This oral contraceptive service aims to make it easier for some women who are already on the pill to obtain a further supply of the same pill.

Asset Chemist online Doctor Service can supply three months of your current contraceptive pill.  After the initial supply of three months, Asset Chemist Online Doctor can make further supplies of your contraceptive pill only if you provide us your blood pressure reading, weight and current smoking status.

You are still required to have your normal pill check with your doctor.  Our service is only suitable for women who are NOT pregnant, who have NOT taken a contraceptive pill before and NOT under 18 years of age.

Effectiveness of the contraceptive pill

It's very effective indeed, which is why so many millions of women rely on it.  If you take it exactly as prescribed, then its effectiveness is likely to be almost 99 per cent.

How do you take it?

In the UK, you're given a pack containing 21 Pills and you take one every day for three weeks.  At the end of those three weeks, you 'break' for a week.  During those seven days, you'll have your period.  It's stopping the Pill at the end of the pack that brings on the period.  After the week's break, you start on your next packet.  So it's 'three weeks on and one week off' throughout the year.

Possible Side Effects

As with all prescribed medication, many women get minor, passing side-effects, such as: headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, slight weight gain and slight 'spotting' of blood between the periods.

The contraceptive pill can occasionally cause serious problems like:

  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or clotting heart attacks
  • strokes

The potential for serious side effects are increased if you fall into the categories below.

Risk Factors

  • being a smoker
  • having a family history of thrombosis or some similar illness (say, if your mother had a heart attack or a deep vein thrombosis at 40)
  • being severely overweight
  • being diabetic (though quite a few non-smoking diabetics do use the Pill, under careful supervision)
  • having high blood pressure
  • having a high cholesterol level (hypercholesterolemia)
  • a past history of phlebitis (vein inflammation) or thrombophlebitis
  • being immobile for a while (especially when having a surgical operation), very long journeys in planes or cars
  • varicose vein
